Health Authority Placement Requirements


Requirements for All Health Authority Placements

The Student Practice Education Core Orientation (SPECO) is a requirement for all interns to complete prior to starting internship.

SPECO contains several modules on various orientation topics. All modules are required to be completed, including additional topics linked within SPECO (e.g. violence prevention modules, hand hygiene module).


Directions for Completing SPECO

  1. Access Student Practice Education Core Orientation (SPECO) in the CCRS registration system.
  2. Select the “Start Course” button.
  3. Sign in to CCRS.
    1. If you already have an account on the CCRS, log in with your username and password.
    2. New users, select the new user option to create a profile.
    3. Select Student for "Employment Status"
    4. Select your Health Authority placement site for "Primary Organization"
    5. Enter required student Information:
      • Under "Student Role" – write Dietetics Intern
      • Use UBC Alumni email address NOT a personal email. Make sure you know how to access this email address as you will receive a confirmation email after signing up. (NOTE for Island Health only: use your Island Health email address instead of UBC Alumni email address)
      • Check email to confirm your registration.
  4. Log back in and go to the "User Profile" tab to add your school name (Facility Name) and program (Department field).
  5. Complete the learning module and additional prerequisites – you can complete the program in more than one sitting. The system will keep record of which modules you have completed.
  6. Complete the Student Health Authority Orientation Checklist at the end of "Next Steps" module and save your SPECO Certificate of Completion.
    • The certificates of completion for the courses are available under "Training History" of your user profile.
  7. Email the completed Student Health Authority Orientation Checklist and SPECO Certificate of Completion to your Core Site Internship Coordinator by the end of the first week of internship.
    • If the checklist cannot be electronically filled in, email a scanned copy or photo of the completed checklist.


Additional Health Authority Requirements

These are requirements specific to each Health Authority, in addition to SPECO.

  • Complete the confidentiality form
  • Review the information on the Placement Orientation page. Take an overview look at the items under these categories:
    • Guidelines
    • Policies
    • Clinical Decision Support Tools (CDSTs)
  • Items on the Placement Orientation page that not necessary for Dietetic Interns:
    • ACCU-CHEK® Inform II Glucose Meter module - not required
    • Print/bring unit/location orientation checklist -  not required
    • Automated Medication Distribution System (ADMS/PYXIS) access or PARIS Electronic Documentation System - not required
    • Student Training For Mental Health, Residential and End of Life - not required

Review “Orientation for Student and Faculty” page and complete items 2 - 5 listed under “Prior to Placement”

  • Before August 8th, scan and email completed IH External User Access Agreement to your Site Coordinator
  • Review the Student Placement Administrative Policy AU1100 prior to commencement of your internship placement(s).  Sections 3.21 and 3.22 not applicable. Associated Interior Health policies within AU 1100 should be reviewed.  These policies can be found on the Policies page and include, but are not limited to:
    • AR0400 Privacy & Management of Confidential Information
    • AR0450 Managing Privacy & Security Breaches / Violations
    • AR0500 Email &Text Messaging
    • AR0600 Internet Access Policy
    • AR0100 Acceptable Use of Information Systems
    • AV1300 Staff Influenza Immunization and Exclusion
    • AV0900Prevention and Management of Exposure to Communicable Diseases
    • AV1900 Respiratory Protection Program
    • AU0100 Standards of Conduct
    • AU1000 Workplace Environment
  • CPR is not required

  • Information about Island Health placement requirements will be communicated by your site coordinators and the UBC Dietetics Practice Educator
  • If you would like to do a placement at Island Health (and it is NOT your core site), contact the UBC Dietetics Practice Educator

  • Complete the online employee orientation (available from the site coordinator)
  • Complete the confidentiality form (available from the site coordinator)

If you are doing an elective placement, orientation requirements will be communicated by the Northern Health site coordinators or your preceptor

  • Complete the confidentiality form - see the Dietetics section on the Students page

  • If Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is your core site: Information about placement requirements will be communicated to you by the VCH site coordinators
  • If you are doing an elective placement: Complete the online VCH Confidentiality Undertaking. The confidentiality undertaking is located with the Student Practice Education Core Orientation (SPECO) modules in the “Information Privacy” section
  • UBC-issued student photo identification and name badges must be worn at all times during placements with VCH
