On Friday September 16th 2022, UBC Dietetics welcomed over 70 students, staff, faculty, and guests to celebrate the launch of the new Master of Nutrition and Dietetics Program. Our honoured guests included Joanie Bouchard, Registrar of the College of Dietitians of BC, as well as Angela Doro, President, and Shiho Uzawa, Marketing Director, from Freybe Gourmet Foods.
Hosted at Agora by the vibrant Xinyan Fan, the event opened with a warm welcome and territorial acknowledgement, followed by speeches. First, Dean Rickey Yada shared some thoughtful and amusing opening remarks. Then, Dr. Tamara Cohen, Director of Dietetics, shared her heartful gratitude to everyone that has helped to “give birth” to this new Program. Dr. Cohen also formally announced that Freybe is funding a new scholarship for an MND student (or students) committed to supporting mental health through their work or community involvement.
To celebrate the occasion, Dr. Cohen, Dean Yada, Joanie Bouchard, Angela Doro and program lead Anna Brisco joined the new MND students and cut a ceremonial red ribbon.
This year, UBC Dietetics also began a new ritual for incoming students—each student received their own name badge from Dr. Cohen and the Dean. Students can proudly wear their UBC badges in practice education placements throughout the program.
Attendees enjoyed an array of delicious foods prepared by the dietetics team with expertise. Some BC local farmers, cheesemakers, food producers, and grocery companies sent their congratulations and delivered products to this event. We would like to thank the sponsors that made this tasty spread possible: BC Dairy, Choices Markets, True Nosh, and Freybe Gourmet Foods.
